Why Visit?
Texas is like a country in itself. It’s the second largest state next to Alaska but for the dedicated traveller, it has a rewarding diversity to make any journey here more than just boot scootin cliches of cowboys. It boasts some incredible landscapes, food dishes that are synonymous with the state and historical sites and towns that have made Texas famous worldwide.
Think Tex Mex, NASA, the Alamo, the Dallas Cowboys, rodeos, line dancing, country music, cattle ranches, oil and you know you're in Texas. You have plenty of space and lots of driving so saddle up for the ride.
Things to Do
San Antonio is a large city but doesn’t have the big town feel of Houston or Dallas. It's got a strong American-Mexican culture and is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Stroll along the 15 mile San Antonio River Walk where you’ll follow winding pathways and picturesque bridges past restaurants, bars and shops as boats float past on the river.
Or visit the World UNESCO site of The Alamo in San Antonio. In between San Antonio and Austin is a truely unique disc golf course Flying Armadillo in San Marcos. Here you’re throwing around obstacles and sculptures. It’s not the hardest or most competitive course but it’s definitely the most fun and perfect if you’re travelling with children. Buy a cowboy hat and boots and visit the Fortworth Stockyards for a rodeo and try and ride the mechanical bull. Dallas is famously where JFK was assassinated and there’s plenty of tours and a dedicated museum associated with the event and celebrating the former president’s legacy.
Houston is a city forever linked to moon landings and space travel. Explore the city’s NASA Space Centre or walk through the largest subterranean network of airconditioned tunnels in the USA on the Astroville Tunnel Tour. The tunnels connect major banking hubs, skyscrapers and corporate buildings and are a great way to beat the Texas summer heat. Out of the cities, there’s plenty to experience like river tubing down Guadalupe River or hiking and star gazing in Big Bend National Park in west Texas.
Where to Play
Texas is certainly a US state you’ll want to consider for disc golf travel with more than 740 courses. The I-35 highway that runs through the State from San Antonio through Waco and up to Dallas and Fortworth is touted as the perfect way to experience some of the best disc golf in Texas.
Roy G Guerrero disc golf is a popular and highly praised course in Austin sitting in the State’s top 10. While you’re in town, take a splash in the famous Barton Springs pool in Zilker Park where there’s a disc golf course. And if you’re staying in town from spring to fall, see the world’s largest urban bat colony every evening fly out from the Congress Ave Bridge at dusk to hunt for insects. As you head north on I-35 through Waco and west you’ll find the Dino Hills Disc Golf Farm. Here you can camp and get food nearby and enjoy three different disc golf courses to play, Carnivore Valley, Pterodactyl Ridge and Microrapter. Microrapter is a putt-putt course made from materials left on the family farm and all the holes are Par 2s. It’s lit up each night for anyone camping on the property who wants to play and a lot of fun in the day or night. Buffalo Disc Golf Course is about 40 minutes by car from Fort Worth and among the top 10 courses in Texas.
And of course the top ranked course in Terrell , that also ranks among the best in the US and the world’s top list ,is The Hideaway Roadrunner Disc Golf just out of Dallas. Plus you have The Scorpion course on the same property. Reviewers love the place and call it a destination well worth the trip.
