Why Visit?
Spain sits with its back to the Mediterranean gazing out at the sunset, so the saying goes. This exciting and vibrant country has the best of both worlds. You can sip sangria while sampling delicious tapas along the sunny Mediterranean coastline, venture over to Africa and back in a day or miander along the more lush, green and less touristed Cantabrian Coast on the Atlantic Ocean. It gives you diversity no matter what season you're here including the Balearic islands like Majorca and the Canary Islands - the popular volcanic archipelago for Europeans seeking out winter sun.
Things to Do
Barcelona with its much-photographed Gaudi architecture and the famous pedestrian boulevard La Rambla has now surpassed Paris as the most visited city in the world. Enjoy and embrace the craziness. Take the train south a short stop to Sitges beach. Watch the absolute bonkers La Tomatina near Valencia then head to the Pyrenees for some hiking or mountain biking. Disc golf courses are scattered through the region as you head up through the capital Madrid to the rugged Atlantic Coast that feels a million miles away from the sun-drenched Mediterranean. Try the delicious pintxos in the Basque country or head to Bilbao’s famous Guggenheim Museum. Spain is also famous for the pilgrim trail Camino de Santiago, which happens to finish on the Atlantic Coast right by Mont de Gozo disc golf course.
Down in the very south of Spain, there’s the kite-surfing capital of the world, Tarifa. Beautiful and expensive golf resorts are dotted around this part of the country. Your proximity to Africa becomes real if you’re lucky enough to get clear views across to the continent from the Rock in Gibraltar. Take a day trip on a fast-ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco. On the very touristy Mediterranean, you'll find the Costa del Sol, Costa Brava and Costa Blanca. It's on the Costa del Sol that you'll find Spain's top course, Mijas Disc Golf. People watch in Malaga at the chiringuitos beach bars. Where to Play
Map out the key areas of Spain for your trip and they’ll be courses to play during your journey. If it’s the Mediterranean sun and sand you’re seeking, then Mijas Disc Golf out of Fuengirola has to be on your list as the top disc golf course in Spain and a popular place for Northern Europeans to head in the depths of winter. Nearer to Malaga is Sunview Park with a disc golf course. The Andalucian capital Serville has the beginner-friendly Parque de Alamillo disc golf course. Rarely do you get the luxury of a disc golf park in a major city, but the Paul McBeth Foundation and Madrid Disc Golf made this happen on the campus of one of the world’s oldest universities, Complutense Disc Golf Course.
Up in the North, the terrain changes from rocky vistas to woods and green fairways. Mont de Gozo disc golf course in Santiago de Compostela is in a park on the final stretch of the famous 1000 year pilgrim walk across Spain, the Camino de Santiago that sees thousands tackle the hike every year. IrrisarriLand Disc Golf, set in the mountains of Navarra, is located in the IrrisarriLand Park which has biking, zip lining, accommodation and restaurants. North of Barcelona is Bosc la Riba - a park with plenty of outdoor activities, including the disc golf course. It has some beautiful challenging fun holes and the drive there is also worth the effort because you stay on the property if you're travelling in a campervan. It’s greener and more lush in Northern Spain sometimes called the Green Coast and the disc golf courses along this coast reflect the terrain. Get some hill climbing in at Parque Purificación Tomás disc golf course out of Oviedo, and you’ll be rewarded with views over the city, Mount Naranco and Aramo Mountain Range. You can also bag another country and head deep into rural Portugal to play the country’s top course, Valle D’encant Disc Golf.
